My problem with family readings of anything is the tacit understanding that if you think for yourself, you are not welcome in the family. Add in annual (or more often, mine was merely annual and solely at Christmas/Easter both of which were already so horrible as to be an inherent denial of any positive message) repetition and you have a recipe for ostracism.
But I could do with less shooting.
Maybe we could encourage people to teach their children, and thereby themselves, about why we are celebrating something? My being 39 when I discovered that Memorial Day isn't to honor generic dead people, but just dead veterans certainly makes the need personal.
