seryn: my own favorite hat (hat)

I have a headache.
I got too hot exercising. I come home. There's a rent increase notice in the mailbox. Not a huge increase but when housing prices are dropping across the board? Maybe we're not actually good tenants who they should avoid alienating? I don't know, but every time they raise my rent I think we should move.

My SO is irked because the phone rang a bazillion times while I was gone. I was gone for 75 minutes and got 3 phone calls. All from the same person. The only contact I got from this person recently was a bitchy email saying that the things we did together 20 years ago were only because I insisted. Then last week, I got a malware distribution email, which, although I read it via y!mail, managed to do something lame enough to make the AV barf and required hours of testing to regain confidence. (It looked like a real email from someone I know, so I opened it; I'm not stupid enough to click on the link, but if it had any images or scripting, it wasn't filtered because it came from a trusted source. Mucho lame.) So she calls my cell phone, I shouldn't give that out to people; really, if I'm out, I can't really take calls anyway. Then she left a message on my home phone. Then the voice mail notification bleeped on my cell, and by this time, my SO has been thoroughly disturbed.

It's time to fix some of this shit going on. But I still have to do my taxes. I took the no-permission-needed extension in April because my SO was sick and had promised to fix the printer "on the weekend" for 2 months (it's still not fixed). So I can't drop everything and go to Maui. Or even Santa Barbara. My carpets need shampooing. My drapes need to go to the cleaners. I need my blinds scrubbed. I have clean laundry that hasn't been put away for 12 days. There's crud in the oven that needs to be cleaned for real not just the wipe-with-dead-sponge kind of effort.

The TV situation is still fucked. Like we haven't canceled the cable even though the box fights us all the time (it changes the channel to a randomly selected station different from the one chosen about 60% of the time, making the TiVo useless, but it does it with its own remote as well.) I bought an antenna but I can't get it to work with the laptop (even though we already owned a laptop tv dongle that plugs into a USB port). So I can buy a digital converter box to use with my antenna and plug the whole mess into the actual TV. But the likelihood of the TiVo being able to change channels on the new box is nil. If I were to upgrade everything we have now, I could retain the functionality we had 14 months ago before the cable company discontinued their unscrambled broadcasts. (Before then we were no-cable-box cable customers.) But I'd need a new TiVo, a new TV, a new stand, a new disc player, a new Roku, and my cable service would cost 4X what I was paying last month. So I'm looking at spending about $3K plus $160/month because OTHER PEOPLE changed their services. Everything was absolutely fine until things were "up"graded. Now nothing works. And it's all on me because I was the one who agreed to take the cable box. So somehow it's become my job to make it work. But without spending the cost of a used car to do so.

My computer is starting to limp along. I really need a widescreen monitor (I did manage to upgrade to LCD, but need to upgrade again.) I even told my SO I was going to buy this, well, I was going to buy a huge monitor for the living room media laptop and steal its 24" widescreen. My SO said, "Wait, I'll ask around at work and help you get something good." But he hasn't asked anyone anything. Then when I mentioned it again, he said, "We'll talk about it on the weekend."

There's never any time for any of this. Even jobless, I can barely keep up the housework, and there's never enough time to really get ahead. We live in a tiny apartment and still the carpet isn't vacuumed every week. No one has looked at the bills that came in the mail this week (we still get real statements even though we don't mail out checks... no one promises delivery of email, so email statements aren't reliable.) I could have looked at the bills, but when it's bank statements, credit card statements, and phone bills, and electricity all arriving the same week, along with the cable bill saying "Ha! ha! You didn't cancel during the promotional rate, now you're totally screwed!" I really don't want to even look.
