Making His Way

Even though it had stopped raining, his wife's stole was still dripping wet in his hand.

She'd left him alone and dashed off to the bathroom in hopes of repairing the damage the deluge had done, but he was still waiting.

This was not turning out to be a good party.

He had wanted to show her off and the CEO's cocktail hour seemed like a good opportunity.

Everyone at work would see how amazingly hot his wife was. She'd spent a thousand dollars on a little white dress and the wildly pink fringed stole, trying to look nice on his arm. But the stole had bled all over and left her looking like a half-albino flamingo.

He didn't want to start mingling with a handful of sodden pink lace, but he was starting to look like a man in a prostate commercial waiting at the bathroom door. Finally the door cracked open and a bare but toned arm reached out and took the stole. She said, "Go on. Get a drink. I'll see you out there in a few minutes."

There was a bit of good-natured ribbing that he hadn't been able to pry his wife away from her career, which was a relief since that meant they hadn't seen his wife's sodden dash. He ordered a pink gin from the bartender and heard the gasp from most of the room.

Turning around, he saw his beautiful and brilliant wife in a hot pink dress stride into the room. She walked up to him and took the matching glass from his hand and kissed him on the cheek. Everyone was looking at her, and consequently at him. They were all dressed in blacks and whites, there was even a woman in the same white dress his wife had bought. But now she was the star, the sun all the flowers pointed their heliotropic faces toward, the orchid in the sea of carnations.

She turned slightly and said, "Hello, Governor!"

"With this beautiful lady at your side, you could go far."

That was how he'd started his Senate campaign.

Prompt: stole, dripping, wife, thousand, wild, officer, flamingos

Pick three or more. You don't necessarily have to use the word itself.

Used all words given in prompt... CEO is "chief executive officer" :-)

I am most pleasantly buzzed.

I went to dinner. (gasp shock, I know)

I ate facing the cafe windows and there was a lip print on mine. Someone left a kiss.

While I was eating, a tow truck rolled by, toting a police cruiser.

On the way home I thought
the sky is midnight smooth with stars painted on.
well, really they're clouds and they hang so low it's like a mobile.

I had a really nice cocktail before dinner. Everyone raves about the drinks and it was a new-to-me place. It didn't occur to me how much gin there must be in something made with pineapple juice in order to get it to taste like a really high-class margarita. It was pinkish yellow. I had a couple sips and it was so good, I kept sipping at it while I read my book. I was only about halfway when I looked up and realized the streetlights had that drunken haze drifting in like Sandberg's Little Cat Feet.

My food was probably merely okay, but there is something to be said for feeding people who are beyond the cares of the day.

I had dessert. I had been a little leery because all the desserts came with ice cream and I really don't like cold desserts. But it had hot toasted coconut on it and the underside was a bitter chocolate cake. If I'd known, I would have had that for the starter and finished with an order of the pomme frites. It's so weird to me that people like to finish meals with sweet food. I like to finish meals with crunchy food.

Maybe next time, since this place cost enough they should be willing to do whatever I want, I'll tell them I want my dinner in reverse.

They'd never forget me then.

Did I tell you what I like about living in California? I walked around the block from my apartment and had California French cuisine with really top-notch cocktails from a restaurant with a stellar (but very limited) selection of wines. This is the kind of place I'd like to eat even if I had to drive an hour to go there and it's right here so I didn't have to phone a friend because I can't find my feet let alone drive.
