On the whole, there is something to this impulse buying idea. I've managed to talk myself out of buying a loom. It seems like something, in this low-end price range of folding devices, that I should be able to try one in a store. There's an MSRP, so I would have bought in person. (Contractually there can be no discounted prices. Some places will offer free shipping or other perks, but the ability to get in-person assistance would be worth more than the shipping.)

And who knows if I would even like weaving. I certainly didn't like it on the lowest-end loom. Not only did I not like doing it because the ergonomics sucked, I didn't particularly like the result which changed the plush yarn into a thin-flat expanse of perforated fabric with crunchy edges.

I guess that means I should be photographing my handspun and offering it to friends. I have to do something with it. It's hard to let it go though.

My SO probably should be talked out of buying things. Especially electronic things. He's got the worst timing ever. He's the guy who bought a media laptop 1.5 weeks before Windows 7 came out. He's the guy who took delivery of a Mac mini the day the Intel chipset version was announced. Whatever it is, he'll manage to pay more and get less. He's the guy who pushed to get new phones right before the Droid came out which would have meant no hassles with Sprint.

I know he knows he needs to be talked out of getting stuff because he talks me out of getting stuff all the time. And he wouldn't put that kind of effort in if it wasn't how he wants to be treated. But I find it difficult to argue that buying a media laptop is a butt stupid idea right now.... I didn't know there was going to be a new OS version and I didn't know it wasn't going to suck even more than Vista. I just had that sinking feeling that says I'd be better off keeping my wallet put away.

I would have bought the loom if I could have gotten a straight answer from anyone comparing the pros and cons of each one. But now it's too late. I'd rather have the $250 even if it sits in the bank earning 0.001% interest. Whenever everyone is lying to you about the relative quality of various products, it's safe to say that there's something seriously wrong with all of them.

This anti-buying stuff started on Friday last week when I was unable to go out for second breakfast because there aren't a lot of breakfast place choices around here and the one I know of with non-metered street parking had no spots within several blocks. (I actually circled until I realized if the parking was full, I'd never get a table before breakfast was over.) Then I bought several packs of English muffins, some nice butcher-made sausage, eggs (not subject to the recall), ham, and real cheese. What I spent on effectively 12 breakfasts was less than what going out once would have cost.

Having enough money to take myself out for a nice breakfast made by someone else doesn't make me happy if I don't take advantage of it. I could buy a loom, but I'd rather have the yarn than waste it making something truly shitty out of it.

I'm kind of stunned that there aren't more breakfast restaurants. The mark up on breakfast is enormous. But I need to be able to get there, park, have a table, and be served coffee straight away with zero hassle or I'd rather not bother. There are a bunch of restaurants around the corner from me, but they're never open for breakfast. Pretty much nothing is open for breakfast except Starbucks and they don't have food.
