As good of a deal as it is to buy a half pound of coffee at Peets when I'm dragged out there by the coffee woman, because then I get a free coffee included, there is something deeply satisfying about having the right coffee.
This morning I opened the hermetically sealed bag from Longbottom Coffee and even though this isn't my usual flavor (I try to be adventurous, buying 1 of something else every once in a while.) it's so vastly superior to the Peets that I can't imagine why I bothered buying from anywhere else.
This coffee, even in the not-the-best blend, is rich, smooth, and nuanced. It's got the kind of complexity that goes extraordinarily well with milk and none of the harshness that requires it. I do not have an upset stomach if I drink a whole pot by myself. (I can't always finish my cup of the Peets the same day without Tums.) I'm also using about half as much ground coffee to get the same brewed strength because this is just better coffee.
The friend who turned me on to the Longbottom people has since left my life but I will continue to appreciate that recommendation even though we're no longer close.
If you're a coffee person, and especially if you like your coffee with milk, the Black Gold blend is my favorite. I've talked to some of the people who work there and they have different preferences being the non-milk kinds of coffee-drinkers.
ps. the icon isn't cappuccino art, it's yogurt art, but I did do it myself. Yogurt allows for slower drawing and going back to find a camera because it doesn't fade into the base liquid on its own.
