Where is the Department of Praise? I need to submit my application for their services.
I mentioned earlier that my SO's mother is coming to visit us. That's in like 10 days. (yipes!) So I went through some stuff today and *gasp* disposed of some things we don't actually want. Well, disposed is a verb form indicating completion, but they're all stacked up near the door to go out.
I had 8 empty shoeboxes (and 3 full ones which were full of things I thought I'd lost...) and, shockingly, 5 empty laundry soap bottles. I usually try to keep one empty around so I can decant from the brand new one to partially fill an old one, but in between they changed the size of the cap... so I was filling to the 1-load line but using 3 times the recommended soap by using the old containers. And honestly the new laundry soap is so concentrated that I don't find it that difficult to carry the new bottle. (Because I didn't buy the hogshead or the tun size containers.)
I am also sacrificing my collection of odd styrofoam. I don't have a use for it but I might at some point in the future, and one cannot actually buy it retail. I have a terrible time getting rid of things which cannot be replaced. I did save out the one piece which can be converted into knitting needle storage (I have a similar system now but the current foam is Swiss cheesed from years of use.)
I feel awesome though. My stuff. It doesn't control me. I don't even want that stuff anymore.
And my table is almost empty. I can see the sewing machine. The chair for using the sewing machine has been exhumed. I can get to the ironing board. I'm pretty sure I win.
So if someone could please send along my information, I'll be expecting my certificate from the Department of Praise.

Date: 2010-06-15 05:29 am (UTC)You should not let it get to that point. You often say that you would like to keep your options open, so you shouldn't let your collection of stuff grow until it forms an anchor.
I admit part of why I worked on this is that I didn't want to hand-hem those pants. Bleah.

When I moved back here, I did a declutter the likes of which I have never done. I own very little now. A cat and his stuff, two computers, a bed, some DVDs and some books. I could probably fit my entire life into the back of a Ford Focus, and I think I like it that way. I feel FREE.
