Success! of a moderate sort.

I was able to exhume the sewing machine and get it threaded and with the matching bobbin. I failed a bit at making it go because I forgot that it wasn't plugged in--- or rather I forgot that when it's plugged in the power switch turns on a light, I figured there wasn't any indicator!

I was able to hem, with the doubled hem, my SO's new jeans. If you look at either leg, it looks fine, the length is acceptable. However, when you look at both legs, they're different. Not hugely so, but enough that I felt it was obvious.

My SO claims that with black socks and black shoes, no one will ever notice.

When I hand-hemmed my trousers, I made sure to hem at that top-most point so my toes would not catch when I put them on. I could not do that with the doubled-hem. (You fold it up, then fold it up again, adds heft to the bottom edge and guarantees that the cut edge will not show.)

I have not ever used a sewing machine before. I feel hugely successful despite the really mediocre end result. Either leg would have been fine... I should have put more effort into matching them to each other and less into matching the fold line I'd been given, but it's hard to adjust when you don't have the model handy.

My SO is grateful that he did not have to do this. It's his sewing machine too. Most people get really uptight about other people using their sewing machines. And he would rather have me use it than do it himself. I'm just stoked that it actually works.

Hooray the sewing! That's awesome news.

I find it's easier the more you practice. Purlbee.com has some super cute project things, too.
