I'm sure these are everyone's favorite posts, when I have a whole weekend full of comments on things I've read or watched that no one else has seen, so I'm going to ramble on about other stuff.

I did finish 2 books from the library. Library borrowing is one of the things that keeps me from wanting a Kindle. I know one can do library borrowing (with some libraries and some subset of the collection) on the Sony readers, but I'm still boycotting Sony.

I've got strawberries and watermelon. There are still nectarines from last week. Skipping the market this weekend because blah.

I spent a bunch of time this week looking at savory shortbread options because my SO does not eat sweets but crackers aren't very exciting unless there's dip or spread and that's a mess to bring to a party. I think in terms of traveling well, there is a reason why people bring glazed cookies. The glaze hardens up then the cookies can be stacked. But no one likes those. The icing is gross in texture and chemically from the coloring, the cookies are bland and almost stale because the icing sucks moisture out of the cookie and the best iced cookies have no leavening so the shape doesn't get distorted. But shortbread cookies are mostly butter and flour with a minimal amount of sugar. Omitting the sugar is not unfeasible. Parmesan cheese is a common version.

The 4 remaining teams for the World Cup (soccer), which will be winnowed to 2 on July 6 and 7, are Uruguay and Netherlands; Germany and Spain. I'm just hoping for Netherlands to beat Uruguay, then all the flags are basically 3 big bars of color. I'd been planning to do lime shortbread for Brazil. I think it would be neat to have a sweet and a savory shortbread where the dough is colored instead of there being icing, though the sweet one might have sugar on top to signify it.

I want to pick up new friends who are reading books and talking about them. Who are watching new TV I might want to see (as opposed to the ass-sucking shows where it looks like they're trying to recreate high school gym class in the middle of the jungle by deliberately making people compete and encouraging sabotage and in-fighting). As much as I enjoy having friends who sympathize when I have issues, I want to be pulled out of my navel-gazing by people who point out that there is stargazing and looking beyond myself will broaden my horizons.

I realized last weekend that I've turned old. People from out of town come to visit and we hang out here in my apartment. When I went to visit my grandmother, that's what she had planned. When I'd go home to visit my parents after college, that's what they did. It doesn't matter if something is going on, when people visit, you feed them and they chat around your table. That's what visiting my SO's family was like too. (I picked someone with the same kind of family background as mine. Ethnically the same mixture, parents religious nature similar, education and interests matching, same family living arrangements and social mores.... I really didn't expect it to be different.) But it used to be that when people came to see me, there would be something we were doing. Some event or activity was planned because just sitting around was boring. Now I have become boring.

This weekend I have plans. I'm going to find another tai chi class, because one day a week with the same instructor isn't doing it for me. I'm going to find online resources so I can read the text and look at the pictures and hopefully pick up some of the necessary basic vocabulary and postures by name. Then I'm going to bake. And maybe spin or knit. Something interesting and completely quiet. I have to contrast with the ambient populace. Especially my upstairs neighbor who has taken up juggling the proverbial bowling balls. He rather sucks at it too.

I'll probably also write up comments on JR Ward's Lover Mine and some book for kids called Extra Credit. Hopefully I won't spend too much time contrasting the massive increase in quality comparatively (I read them in that order) but it's pretty likely I'll complain about Ward's super-pathetic editing.

Whether one goes somewhere when visitors come has something to do with who the visitors are, too, no?
