which don't require logins. Nothing grim or dark please. Comments to these posts appear on my phone, so I will see links no matter where I am.

My SO is still sick. So far the medical stuff hasn't gone "emergency" or "urgent", but I have my bag of "makes waiting without news tolerable" ready to go and my wallet stocked with extra money and my pockets with vending machine change. I lived through this potential kind of crisis before, so I don't need to fear the worst.
But there's no sense in not planning ahead. Having a book and a notepad and tomorrow's dose of prescription meds with you is completely reasonable as a precautionary measure. I'm not being paranoid, I didn't sew extra money into the bag lining.
I just don't want it to go pear-shaped and advance preparation de-Murphys most situations. So the doctor appointment will be "You've got a stomach bug." Not "You've got internal bleeding and need to be hospitalized immediately." Because you know people only get sent to the ER when you don't have a book to read and you've forgotten to go to the ATM. There is only a crisis when your phone isn't charged.
I'd worry that I'd developed some sort of magical thinking OCD thing except it really doesn't hurt to charge your phone and check your wallet for cash. And I know there will be a wait at the doctor's office even if it's just the casual bug thing, so bringing a book is a good idea. None of this is hurtful and it would make sense regardless.
But I find myself wishing for a Mary Poppins bag so I could bring more just-in-case stuff.
