It's a California weirdness. There is a lot of ambient pressure to be vegetarian or at least "trying not to eat much meat" that people actually forget that it's good for you. (Perhaps in moderation, perhaps not for everyone) But people in the post were astonished by how much protein (and essential amino acids without having to fortify it) meat has.
