how does that work? library check-in

So. If I return my library books an hour before the library closes on the day they were due, but the library does not check them in, will I be fined?
The library is able to detect the books I checked out and they certainly don't have enough help to empty the bin during the last hour they're open. But it kind of seems like this would be a good use for a self-scanning system.
I love library books for being out when the hardback is new but not costing all that money because I'm sharing with everyone else in my town. And surprisingly my quitting the volunteer gig there didn't make all the librarians bitchy and resentful. But I really hate it when my books are due and it looks like I'm going to owe several dollars in fines but it's totally not my fault.
ps... Dreamwidth? I need the tag cloud, if you could get somewhere with that since you've been taunting us for a year about how you were going to stop wasting half the screen real estate on blankness, that would be really nice. I know there are reasons why this is hard, legacy code, repairing bad legacy code for the modern century, legacy code, compatibility, and fringe elements who are really outraged when something that doesn't currently work for them will not get better for their 0.001% userbase after the update... but I hate guessing what tags I've been using.
