Discussion of cursing elsewhere. I like cursing, but I rarely blaspheme. The rationale is simple, I don't think it's useful to take someone else's gods in vain. How is that going to help? In the expected/usual circumstance, nothing happens. Plus the slight chance of causing additional offense and making the situation worse. But the really rare awesomely miraculous occurence when the gods wake upon hearing their names? Seems like they'd be more likely to help the other side instead of me.
Plus, surprisingly, it condones the continued perpetuation of a hateful mythology.
I have words that I think are extremely rude to say. You hear them a lot on television now because they're not about sex, they denigrate women at least referentially. The newest one is "douche". It's everywhere. But that's a bit like calling someone dish soap. The only negative connotation comes from the fact that only women use it and they use it to rinse their vaginas of filth. Since, like most internal body parts vaginas are self cleaning, it's implied that only someone with multiple sex partners would need artificial cleansing. So a douche is something only whores use. But you notice there's no way to get to the idea that it's demeaning without bringing in an external reference? That really bothers me.
I had some other topic that didn't go with this at all, but I was going to combine it.
