I watched a really decent movie tonight, Dakota Skye.

I was surprised to like it as much as I did because the main characters are stoners who have checked out of life at 17. But I found it interesting because they're so unapologetic about it.

The female lead has the ability to tell when someone's lying to her, and in fact to "hear" the truth while they're talking. Truth is displayed as lifted subtitles almost akin to cartoon speech balloons. The conflict arises from when she meets someone who does not seem to lie.

It was fairly introspective. I love that superpower. And I liked how the main female lead character changes the course of her entire life based on the interpretation of what someone says.

Detriments to what otherwise might have been a 5 star movie, 85% of the movie was a flashback and the current now does not appear to have been on the same track as the flashback's timeline. I'm also old enough that I really don't think 14 year olds should be so open about having sex. That seems immoral, both that she was losing her virginity at 14 and that she didn't seem ashamed about it. I'm really bothered by the idea that people who have completely checked out of their lives before the end of high school are having sex. It just seems irresponsible to have no plans for the future but to be doing something that could cause infinite demands for responsibility.

I think it was probably fairly realistic which is almost terrifying.

Still. overall. a nicely introspective film about a girl with a minor superpower.
