musical chairs
Nov. 28th, 2009 07:40 pmTime for embarrassing admissions?
The three songs I bought with my free $3 in Amazon music credits (part of their "Black Friday" deals) were:
"Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes
"If Today Were Your Last Day" by Nickelback
"Real World" by Matchbox 20
My previous purchase (during their $1.29 free credit deal) was:
"I Don't Care" by Apocalyptica featuring some guy*
* unlike most "featuring" songs, this was neither rap nor hiphouse nor a black singer. It's so bad if you watch music videos on TV that I've started thinking of "featuring" as a term meaning "SEryn will not like this because she's not a racially appropriate audience."
I like most Nickelback when I hear it on the radio, but I don't know that I like it enough to buy a whole album. I probably did like the Matchbox 20 album enough to buy the whole thing but I have lived without it for what 5 years? I probably won't notice.
I have to admit that I LOVE the idea of only buying the good songs and I like the dollar price. I like the Amazon no DRM songs because I feel less like I am "renting" them.
(That does bother me about the Kindle for PC stuff, but as long as I haven't paid a rental fee, I can't bitch. We know Amazon takes back stuff from Kindle users, so it really is a rental fee. It's weird that Amazon would be so vicious for one medium in electronica and so liberal with another.)
But overall, I'm still not a huge consumer of music. I haven't listened to Pandora since Wednesday (some of that is because streaming content when I'm not the only user on our connection is rude) and my iPod had dropped to zero charge since I used it last, like 2 months ago.
If you asked me if I wanted these 3 songs I got for free, the answer is yes. If you asked me if I would have paid the dollar per song the answer is no. Because I can live without it and wouldn't ever notice. I might not even listen to these songs a dozen times over the next year combined. But I wanted more music now that I can listen to it, and I got 4 new songs this year. That might actually be plenty.
Only one person suggested any songs when I asked, and I really really really did not like Hayseed Dixie. Pandora suggested I might like Aerosmith (I cannot stand it.) So I chose randomly off the current-ish groups that I sort of like from the radio. If you want to poke fun at my lousy musical taste, please do so, but I'd like to hear what you think I should have bought instead.

Date: 2009-12-01 06:32 am (UTC)There was a post somewhere about some woman who made a periodic table out of cupcakes. I wanted to send you a link, but I can't imagine you didn't see it for yourself. (Whenever there's a turtle picture on the National Geographic POD, I get a dozen emails.)

Date: 2009-12-05 07:52 pm (UTC)I'm glad you liked the cupcake thing. I read a bizarrely huge number of things via RSS feed and often see things I'm just sure everyone else has seen. That's why I do it, actually. I hate feeling like I'm the stone in the river of conversation. The person everyone resents talking to because they know nothing about anything. But it surprises me when I've found something that seems particularly apt that the person hasn't seen.
