The weekend was interesting media-wise.

We finished watching The Prisoner remake miniseries. It was ghastly bad. Completely and totally incoherent. Most of the references to the previous show were snarky or mocking. There were mocking references to other science fiction shows, not the kind of allusions that honor those who have gone before, but the kind where they indicate that previous shows were worthless cartoons. So. a) show full of bad emo acting. b) terrible script c) incoherent storyline chock full of flashbacks d) writers who refuse to pay homage even when they're doing a remake e) bad ending f) poor dialogue g) cheap looking crappy sets h) mishmash of accents i) ugly costumes j) goes on too tooo toooooo long. k) it makes a show filmed before I was born look high tech and well funded and professional in comparison l) even Ian McKellen could not save this turkey.

We watched Teen Knight. That was about as silly as you are expecting it to be, but it was really nicely done. It's a bit campy and has some campy costumes/sets but those are vaguely intentional since it's teenagers visiting a campy tourist castle. The dialogue is pure modern American even though the actors' names look more like modern Albanian. The plotting was smooth and successful, both in terms of story arc and in terms of character driven-ness. I really enjoyed it for being exactly what it was supposed to be. And it paid homage to a lot of previous films. There was the Willy Wonka golden ticket moment. There's the Dragonheart moment. There's the villain-with-a-beard. There was the "people you meet in the past look just like people you know in the every day world" bit. There was a bit of Harry Potter in that the teens seemed to strengthen under pressure. There were some LOTR allusions. But never did the references seem mocking. So, campy story, made with a low budget, unknown actors, and it was a really decent version of that. I think it could actually have been a bit longer and been more enjoyable, but it hung together tight as it was.

I tried to read and gave up on L. Jagi Lamplighter's Prospero Lost. I read about 30 pages of it and hated the main character. So her trials and tribulations just seemed like something I'd rather hear summed up on the evening news, the kind of story that doesn't merit a live reporter or even pictures. Just a scrolling line at the bottom of the screen.

I'm thinking about going off to watch Hercules reruns and knit on my holiday projects. Or spin. I had to drink a large large mug of coffee this afternoon just to wake up. I couldn't find my head. I'd dozed after my unscheduled nap this morning and wandered around incoherently. I don't think I was ready to wake up quite yet.
