I really need to keep better track of what's hiding in my refrigerator.

I have 2 half-blood oranges, 3 navel oranges, 2 fuji apples, and about an eighth of a watermelon.

My counter has 3 limes. I wish they sold organic limes. It's one of the few fruits I eat the outside of (lime zest is what makes the limeade fantabulous) that doesn't even have the option.

I am completely out of potatoes and the celery has this odd coloration that says, "I am no longer a food. I should be donated to science."

But I canceled our organic fruit box for this week because I'm really uninterested in the selections. They're pretty tolerant of cancelations, but it's really unclear what happens when the list of items has stuff you marked on your refuse list. (Rhubarb, pea greens, beets, bell peppers; to name a few.) Supposedly one can make requests, so I could get avocados, but they don't make promises.

Surprisingly it was the avocados and mangos that put me off. They're ridiculously expensive in stores, so this was a good deal... but they were so difficult to handle, it was hardly worth it. Especially the mangos. Avocados weren't terrible to make into guacamole, but I had to immediately go to the store for accoutrements. If it had been avocados with limes and garlic and red onions... that would have been awesomely useful.

Instead I bought the limes and canceled the box. I'll be making limeade. I'll scrub the limes with soapy water, zest them with the grater and cover the zest with sugar. Then I will put the limes in the microwave for 10 seconds each, juice them with the reamer (this variant of limes don't seem to have seeds). I combine the partially candied lime zest and lime sugar, with water, then stir in the lime juices. Then I add ice and stir until chilled. It is wonderful stuff.

I've done it with lemons, but haven't been able to find a good source of lemons. My grocery store sells 3 varieties of lemon (regular, organic regular, meyer) and they're all harsh with very little complexity or redeeming characteristics.

I did finally come to an understanding as to why people peel oranges and eat segments but cut grapefruits at their equators and spoon out.. The sectioning membranes of grapefruits are really bitter. They are on oranges too, but oranges are actually too sweet without the contrast.

And just for your information, I really don't like blood oranges. They're so sour. They're the crab apples of the orange family. If they're juiced, it looks like grape juice and the taste is horrible with that kind of expectation. Half-blood oranges... which are odd beasts anyway since the top half is orange and the bottom half is purple---- they really rock that "I'm good for you." flavor.
