Where do you want to go?
Apr. 19th, 2010 01:28 pmToday's question says, "If you had to move to a city besides the one you currently live in, where would you move?"
Had to? That implies a lack of choice in the destination because we don't exile people. But discussing the intent of the question, I think I could bloom anywhere as well as I do here.

tv show meme
Apr. 11th, 2010 06:26 pmGrabbed from
archersangel:
Pick your five favorite TV shows (in no particular order) and answer the following questions. Don't cheat!
10 favorite shows in order: [mine do not include non-fiction or reality programming because those are much much much lower in my preferences. Also only current programming. I have shows I have preferred more from the past, but it is time to move on.]
NCIS, Burn Notice, Castle, Mentalist, White Collar, Bones, House, In Plain Sight, Criminal Minds, Chuck
( because many people do not care about my interest in tv... )
( I pasted the questions into a textarea at the very end so if you're thinking of doing this meme, you can pick it up easily. )

Where do you want to go?
Apr. 7th, 2010 09:39 pmThere was a meme-ish question in
jack, If you could live in any fictional world, what world would you live in and why?
I have been thinking about it. It seemed pretty obvious until I considered the comments... where you're not going to be the main character. If you're in Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar, you're not going to be a Herald (most likely; come on, they've got maybe a hundred Heralds and like a million people.) And although it's got some perks like religious tolerance at a governmental level... they've still got their intolerant backwaters--- and some of those are in the capital. They've got decent contraception, but the rest of the womanly processes seem pretty sucky.
I wouldn't want to live on Pern unless I was a male dragonrider. The roles for women are horrible. Even the dragonrider women... the ones who have actual power over their destinies... it's institutionalized forced sex with an unchosen partner and they don't seem to have contraceptives at all. It's got dragons, but even having a dragon wouldn't make up for being a woman in a society that encourages rape.
I've been thinking about it for a whole day and I cannot think of a fantasy world where I would want to be a me-ish person who grew up there. I wouldn't mind being me and being transported to Pern now because I'd start a revolution amongst women. But I'd only be willing to live there if I could know better than everyone else. Thus the whole caveat against being the special person the books usually focus about.
There are lots of books where I wouldn't mind being an average middle class guy. Even if I wasn't the one with the special powers of talking to aliens or doing magic or flying spaceships or whatever. Life for average joes seems pretty decent. [And no, I can't think of one right now off the top of my head.] But all of these places either have no women at all in the books or the women who exist have limited choices that focus on breeding.
It doesn't seem to matter who writes the books. Men, women, old people, young people.... women are either the central character in the story (and thus have special powers) or they're breeding cows who do nothing else with their lives. I'm not special in my current life, but I fucking hate children that come to my attention because they're loud and incapable of stopping. I don't see how I could possibly have children and not kill them. Unless I could special order and get a mute one that could be surgically repaired when it was 15-ish?
Thousands of fantasy books and I can't think of a single one where I would want to live.

What's a song that makes you want to get up and dance? (Feel free to explain why, but that's optional.)
Do you have it in your regular rotation?
Do you resist dancing along to it when you're home alone?
For me, weird things really hook me. I love to be standing and ready when it's a song that has that pause then it slams in at full volume. I will almost always dance if I hit that timing. It doesn't matter what the song is. For me it's that feeling that I've jumped at the right time; if it's audibly .... _ _ _| where there's a wall when the music starts, that will almost always make me want to dance.
My favorite is the intro to Batman Beyond. I also like "Break the Line" by Guano Apes. I don't have the soundtrack to any animated series, so that's not in my rotation. But everything that jumps like that makes it in. (Yes, "Break the Line" is on.)
I always resist if there are people looking. But I never try to resist if I'm alone. I talk to myself, dancing for myself seems actually more productive.
